Overview

Semaglutide is a medication in the GLP-1 receptor agonist class. It is one of several options that licensed clinicians in the SHWCare network may discuss with members who qualify for medical weight management support. Whether semaglutide is appropriate for you — and the specifics of any plan — is a decision made entirely between you and a licensed clinician after a complete medical review.

What Semaglutide is

Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medications mimic a hormone the body naturally produces (glucagon-like peptide-1) that is involved in appetite signaling and glucose regulation. Semaglutide is FDA-approved for several conditions; the FDA-approved uses, branded products, and prescribing considerations are determined by your clinician.

How it works

GLP-1 receptor agonists are studied for their effects on appetite signaling. Members often describe a quieting of constant food-related thoughts, a feeling of fullness earlier in meals, and less urge to snack between meals. The clinical mechanism is complex and individual; we do not generalize results, and no specific outcome is guaranteed.

When a clinician may consider it

Whether a clinician considers semaglutide an option for a particular member depends on their full medical history, current medications, lab results, and goals. The SHWCare intake process is designed to give the clinician enough information to make that decision safely.

Side effects discussed during review

All medications have potential side effects. The most commonly reported with GLP-1 medications include nausea, digestive changes, and headaches — most of which are mild and ease over time. A complete and personalized discussion of risks, benefits, and contraindications happens with your clinician during the review.

Storage & handling

Storage and handling instructions are provided by the dispensing pharmacy at the time of fulfillment and on each medication's label. Always follow your clinician's and pharmacy's specific guidance.

Cost & access

Pricing transparency lives on the LeenRx pricing page and is reviewed with each member during onboarding. Most members ask about insurance, HSA/FSA eligibility, and shipping — all addressed in the FAQ Center.
